Advanced and Intelligent Thermal Materials Systems

KSC develops new technologies such as composite materials, insulation, systems and testing methodologies devoted to meeting the unique thermal requirements and management of the aerospace industry and space exploration.  The materials and systems include foam hybrid systems, polymeric and fiber aerogel composites, shape memory alloys (SMA) switchable systems and cellular solids for structural and thermal applications where reduction in heat transfer are required for steady state and transient thermal management. The development of novel methodologies for the testing and evaluation of these unique thermal materials are also important to the advancing the technology gaps in thermal materials development and utilization.
